How To Choose The Best Astrological Talisman?

A Talisman Maker’s Guide to using Desire, Sect, and Your Chart Ruler to pick a talisman

*this is a summary and a slight elaboration of a video I've recorded on the topic, viewable on my YouTube channel PlanetaryMagic

How do I know if a Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Saturn, or Algol talisman is best for me?
How do I know if a Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Saturn, or Algol talisman is best for me?

As a maker of talismans, one of the questions I get all the time is: “What talisman should I choose, what’s right for me?” In my experience, there are two complementary ways to answer that I recommend to think about first:

  1. Desire based (what you want and need most right now)

  2. Technical (what your natal chart says will help you most)

Used together, these approaches keep you aligned with your earthly goals and with the way the heavens are already dispositioned to help you.

Approach #1: The Desire Based Path (Start With Your Goal)

Ask yourself: What’s the #1 outcome I want to achieve today, next month, or this year? Are you interested in wealth, leadership, career clarity, love, protection, healing, creative output, or spiritual depth? Once you’ve named your target desire, then choose a talisman whose planetary virtue corresponds to that outcome. Say for example you were looking for success in the worldly realm of career, wealth, and status. This could lead you down the path to consider talismans for:

  • Wealth & Achievement: Sun, Jupiter, Mercury (especially if you own a business), and yes even Saturn, can all function as wealth allies when approached correctly with an aligned devotional and ritual process.

  • Leadership, Visibility, Authority: The Sun is superb for those leading teams, running organizations, or holding public roles.

  • Commerce, Sales, Deal-Flow: Mercury is the classic patron for buyers, sellers, and business operators.

Caution: As a Buddhist, I understand our desires are the fuel for personal liberation but also the cause of our greatest obstacles. Sometimes, our desire locks onto a single path and make us feel stuck.

When the results arrive differently than expected, it's natural to feel disappointed and depending on your level of resilience or creativity, one may not be able to leverage the result into one's desired goal. That’s where the technical approach helps you by showing you which talisman is naturally aligned to give a full spectrum of beneficial results.

Approach #2: The Technical Path (Let Your Chart Lead)

Here’s the backbone of how I technically recommend a first (or next) talisman. It’s simple, powerful, and rooted in one's natal chart positions.

Step 1: Identify Your Sect Light (Sun by day, Moon by night)

  • Day births: Your sect light is the Sun.

  • Night births: Your sect light is the Moon.

If you were born close to sunrise or sunset and it’s ambiguous, ask a qualified astrologer to check. (House systems and timing can make this fiddly.)

Starter picks:
Day charts → Solar or Jupiter talisman
Night charts → Lunar or Venus talisman

Step 2: Bring in the In-Sect Benefic

  • Day chart’s benefic: Jupiter

  • Night chart’s benefic: Venus

Your in-sect benefic is naturally disposed to help you without much friction. It’s one of the best first planetary allies to invite.

Step 3: Look to your Chart Ruler and Ascendant Lord

Your Ascendant Lord, the ruler of the sign on your Ascendant, is your chart’s overall protector. It mediates vitality, intellect, and how you navigate through life.

There are multiple calculations for determining your Chart Ruler, which I will not go into here. If you have a favorite calculation or know your chart ruler, feel free to consider it for the following points.

In practice:

  • If your chart ruler or ascendant lord is essentially dignified or well-placed, a talisman of that planet often acts like an overall panacea, boosting mental clarity, health, and your individual ability to live life on your own terms

  • If your chart ruler or ascendant lord is afflicted (debilitated by sign, under hard malefic aspects, etc.), you have options:

    • Choose the planetary ally of that planet to help stabilize its results. This can help until you remediate the ruler.

    • Or work with the planetary enemy of that planet to constrain it from causing undesired results.

Step 4: Consider the Other Luminary + Out-of-Sect Benefic

The Sun and Moon are the cosmic forces that mediate sustenance and balance of all life. Even out-of-sect, they’re generous, stabilizing forces, and can be combined for powerful, low-risk effects. Likewise, the out-of-sect benefic (Jupiter for night charts, Venus for day charts) still can provide meaningful assistance as well if you use the right form of essential dignity.

Step 5: Check Afflictions and Recruit Planetary Allies

If a key planet (luminary, benefic, or your chart ruler) is under heavy affliction, like being aspected by a malefic like Saturn, Mars, Rahu, or Ketu, work with their planetary allies or planetary enemies to help lift them out of their suffering or constrain them from inflicting more harm. Choosing a talisman of the ally (or “friend”) of the problematic planet can pacify the planet's expression in your chart and help re-route their energy toward constructive manifestation.

Step 6: Finally, Fine-Tune to Your Specific Scenario

Once Sect, Benefics, and Ascendant Lord are treated, we have a foundation to leverage the right tool for the right job:

  • Running a team and need gravitas? Pick a Solar Talisman with leadership emphasis.

  • Looking for a life partner? Pick a Venus Talisman for attraction + enjoyment.

  • Looking to increase your B2B sales? Pick a Mercury talisman for deal-flow or a Mars talisman for closing sales.

  • Building a portfolio of long-horizon assets? Consider a carefully elected Saturn Talisman.

Beyond Planets: Mansions, Fixed Stars, & Faces

Even though Planetary talismans are the the most straightforward, the Talisman Master's toolkit is bigger: 28 Lunar Mansions, 15 Behenian Fixed Stars, accessory fixed stars, and the 32 Faces of the planets each add surgical precision for manifesting certain aims. Each of these require an equally in depth understanding and natal chart analysis to know when they're warranted.

Common Pitfalls I Help Clients Avoid

  • Over-attachment to one delivery path: You ask for wealth, but demand it come only through X method. Astrological talismans often have their own ideas about how to deliver results and it requires specific finesse for them to deliver a specific result, often delivering results in unexpected ways. Build flexibility into your magical ask and have the living circumstances necessary to root the magic.

  • Ignoring Sect / Chart Ruler: Skipping these basics is like refusing to water your houseplant and keeping it in a drawer before wondering why its leaves are turning brown. There are simple, foundational principles we can follow to give astrological magic strong roots for continued growth and success in life.

  • Working with afflicted planets blindly: If a planet is screaming in pain, causing suffering in your chart, don’t “turn it up” with talismanic amplification without remediation and ally support. If your friend just lost their job and hasn't left the house in 2 weeks, is it really the best time to ask to borrow $1,000? It can be helpful to think of afflicted planets like this.

Two Real-World Applications (Examples)

Here are two anonymized client examples I can share to illustrate my point.

Example A: Day-Chart Sterile Processing Technician

They enjoy their job, but often feel bullied by their peers to let them slack off and do their work for them. They are older, and a racial minority in their department, so their co-workers had felt emboldened to falsely report them to their manager if they don't comply.

First, we prioritized a Mercury Talisman (speech eloquence, lord of criminals) to allow them to better advocate for themselves without seeming like too much of an outsider in their work environment. Then, we leveraged a Sun Talisman (authority, justice) paired with Jupiter (wealth, favor from authority) to improve their standing within their organization and improve company culture. Soon, a major scandal between the department head and HR head was revealed and a majority of the company's bad actors were and fired. Client has since reported better working conditions and is on track to safely receive their full pension.

Example B: Night-Chart Software Engineer & Aspiring Artist

Although they have found significant success in their professional career, the client is much more interested in and finds fulfillment in their art. They have a natally afflicted Sun and don't feel connected to the Moon so we utilized a Venus Talisman (general artistic capability, creativity, magnetization) and a Jupiter Talisman (wealth, success with new ventures). Soon they receive novel inspiration and create a sculpture and painting series. These pieces gain notoriety overseas. With their creativity restored and popularity cemented, they are now confidant in their ability to create art at their own pace, for the benefit of themselves and their niche audience.

How I Work (and Why People Stay)

My approach marries adherence to the classical principles of astrological magic with practical reality when it comes to choosing astrological talismans. I believe we can accomplish more when we combine clarity of desire with chart-centered analysis. We start with what you truly want, then choose a heavenly ally already inclined to help you: sect-light first, in-sect benefic next, chart ruler on deck, and planetary allies to remediate any afflictions. When we go deeper (mansions, decans, fixed stars), it’s deliberate, not superfluous.

Quick FAQ

What’s a “sect light”?

It’s the luminary of your sect: Sun for day births, Moon for night births. It’s a prime, safe first ally.

What exactly is the “chart ruler” and ascendant lord?

There are different perspectives on the calculation of the chart ruler. The ascendant lord is the planet that rules the sign on your Ascendant. It governs how you initiate, navigate, and embody your life. Strong? It’s a fabulous first talisman. Afflicted? We want to support or remediate that planet strategically before amplifying it.

Is Saturn really a wealth talisman?

Used carefully and with a good talismanic election, Saturn can anchor long-term assets, consistent discipline, and reinforce durable structures. However, your chart and goals determine whether that’s wise right now.

What if my Sun or Moon is afflicted?

We can choose the other luminary and/or bring in planetary allies to stabilize the afflicted planet. Otherwise, we can use a talisman that creates a similar result from the list of Fixed Star, Lunar Mansion, and Decan/Faces.

How to Choose Your Next Talisman Today

  1. Name your single, clearest desire for the next 90–180 days.

  3. Pick your in-sect benefic (Jupiter by day, Venus by night).

  4. Screen for afflictions; where needed, add a planetary ally instead of amplifying a problem.
